Old Bill been high on mountain
For longer than could be told
Came down lower to the outpost
For supplies a hot bath now old
Did all that in a lowers outpost sat
Taking awhile there to chill some
Enjoyong a few drinks better meals
Hearing of things some they'd done
Clothes instead of the furs to wear
Boots instead of what he'd worn
Sitting in a corner odd conversation
Trousers shirts a new hat not torn
Another mountain man he'd met sat
At table awhile saying did ya know
Old mountain Jed died last week
Tipped his hat sad that there ya go
Saying I met him once way back and
We enjoyed a cup of camp fire tea
He was collecting skins storing them
Surviving like several just like me
Well seemed he got drunk on whiskey
Mountain made moonshine seems so
Getting old tied decided to sleep awhile
Curled up in a cave to let the world go
They found him in there ripped to bits
Old Jed had no idea it was later told
As well in that cave an aging bear too
As it as well was in years getting old
Bear must have woke there was Jed
Way to good to pass in cave as a meal
Would not time spoken a word woken
To find bear there how would ya feel
When found bear not there anywhere
Only one didn't need proof of it to be
Jed with one hand on knife lost his life
His created clothes all around to see
Brought him down buried in a bag
He's name on headstone out of town
All drank to his memory on that day
Talked ages of what had come down
So when ya go back up high under sky
Leave ya old dog tied up not far away
Old Jed he had an old dog there as well
Nobodies seen it since might I say
