In today’s superficial world
You wouldn’t be labeled a hero
No swagger or bluster
Nor the physique of an Olympian God
No press agent to book you
Into the suffocating number of talk shows
To brag about how wonderful you are
When they only discuss the accomplishments
Never the failures
The honest essence of the man
You had no plans to parlay your “fame”
Into books, magazine articles
The guest column that no one reads
Unless you cleverly brainwash the readers
Into distorted beliefs.

One startling and stunning photograph
Waving off the weapons of destruction
Taking a stand against Orwellian propaganda
By simply standing there
No mesmerizing speech
Of perfect syntax
Crying on cue
But your guts and courage
Was refreshing to see
That an ordinary man
Not built up physically
Or symbolically
Left a mark on history
As you were shuffled into the shadows
Never to be seen or heard from again.

Were you executed by the cowards?
That are horrified of free speech?
The despots who hate uniqueness?
Or do you walk among us?
A purveyor of the maxim
Do what you say
Not brag about what you’ve done?

All I can say is that I’m sorry
For being unaware for so long
Many have no clue about who you are
And what you stood for
While malnourished
By being spoon-fed by
The empty suits of illusion.
