Restorative justice is a form of healing and rehabilitation the opportunity to make wrongs right. In other words, this for of Criminal and/or Social Justice offers second chances. This means that the women who have just gotten out of prison can have another chance as they re-enter society. Instead of punishing the women, restorative justice seeks to bring out the best in these women by capitalizing on their strengths instead of focusing on their limitations (www.insightprisonproject.org).
According to the First Congregational Website, it is possible that these women may have been victims themselves
of various crimes (www.firstcongmadison.org/news/2018/aug/prison-ministry-
restorative-justice-program). The Salvation Army's Women's Restorative Justice Program in Winnebago County, Illinois provides help for women in that area who have just been released from prison and struggling with addictions recover successfully as they make a positive transitional re-entrance into society (https://centralusa.salvationarmy.org/rockford/women's - restorative-justice-program/). Some services that they provide include but are not limited to long-term temporary housing, weekly appointments with a case manager and/or counselor, child care, clothing and transportation help via bus passes and/or public transit (https://centralusa.salvationarmy.org/rockford/womens-restrative-justice-program/). The Tribeca Film Institute seeks to help young mothers who have just been released from prison find steady jobs and stable housing. This script-writing program gives them the opportunity to process their lives in alignment to other important life skills, such as advocacy, public speaking and writing according to their website.
In sum, the common denominator of these restorative justice models is that they are giving the women who have just gotten out of prison a chance to recover from their setbacks and make amends as they make a positive transitional re-entrance into society. After the healing and restoration, these women can make restitution by helping those who are struggling in the same areas. Of course, this is one way in which they can make a difference in their lives as well as the lives of others. Moreover, this is a way in which they can give back to the society in which they are positively re-entering. All they really need is a chance and this is essentially the message of restorative justice as well as what it looks like for women in these situations.
